Detroit Pistons News:
Pistons Attempting to Keep Tayshaun Prince Amdist Rebuilding Phase
February 22nd, 2011
In a recent Detroit News report, Detroit Pistons general manager Joe Dumars is quoted as saying he would like to explore re-signing small forward Tayshaun Prince.
"Tayshaun has been good here for a long time so I absolutely want to have that conversation at some point," Dumars told the News.
Statically speaking, Prince has played well in the final season of his current contract. His scoring average and shooting percentage are up, and he has maintained his career rebounding and assist numbers.
That said, retaining him beyond this season doesn't make much sense for the Pistons.
This team is clearly rebuilding. It has a young core consisting of two players, Austin Daye and Jonas Jerebko, who could potentially fill the void at small forward. That doesn't even take into consideration that the best player available when the Pistons draft this year could easily be a wing player such as Kentucky 's Terrence Jones.
Re-signing Prince would also eliminate Detroit 's (already small) chance of being a free-agent player this offseason, and in future seasons. Instead, the Pistons could end up using any potential cap space keeping Prince and restricted free agent Rodney Stuckey. It's unclear how this would make the team any better going forward.
Another point of contention is Prince's effect on team chemistry. He has openly feuded with coach John Kuester all season, and beyond that, makes public statements criticizing his team's ability to win ball games.
Clearly this is a man frustrated by losing, but the Pistons aren't primed for a quick turnaround. If he stays, and the team continues to lose, how happy can he be.
Maybe Dumars' quote is just a loyal general manager paying lip service to a veteran player that helped him win a title. Prince is a good player, and it's hardly inconceivable to see him continuing to produce a high level for the next three or four seasons, but the Pistons need to commit to the future, and that means the Pistons need to let Prince walk away.
